Vladimir Kara-Murza: In Moscow today they remembered victims of the terrorist attack at Dubrovka. About 500 people participated in a commemoration. After a minute of silence, all the victims were identified by name. On October 22nd (ed note: October 23rd), 2002, during a performance of the musical Nord-Ost, terrorists took 912 hostages and held them for three days. On the morning of the 26th the authorities launched a special operation during which they used an unknown gas. As a result all the terrorists were destroyed, and 130 hostages, including 10 children, died. Those who survived the raid still demand the names of those responsible for the operation, since many died after rescue in not receiving timely medical assistance. Many survivors of Nord-Ost have chronic illnesses, lost vision and hearing, and yet have not been designated victims of a terrorist attack. Orphaned children receive survivor benefits of about three thousand rubles (about $120 a month). The Korallovo School, founded by Mikhail Khodorkovsky, is the only high school that gives free tuition to child victims of Nord-Ost and other attacks. The European Court of Human Rights is expected by the end of the year to make a decision on the complaint of 80 victims of the terrorist attack at Dubrovka.  Moscow has been hosting events commemorating the eighth anniversary of the hostage rescue at Dubrovka. On Tuesday morning about 100 persons came to Dubrovka to participate in a memorial ceremony in memory of the victims of the 2002 terrorist attack. According to a reporter from Nakanune.RU, hostages, members of public organizations, political parties, and students came to the ceremony. On the evening of October 23rd, 2002, during the second act of the musical Nord-Ost, an armed group of 40 terrorists — 21 men and 19 women — took over a building at the theatrical center on Dubrovka, formerly known as the State Ball-bearing Factory Palace of Culture.

Eight years ago, during the assault on the terrorist-held Dubrovka Theater, Yuri Torshin led one of the Alpha group commando units. His soldiers back then destroyed rebel leader Movsar Barayev.
